Activity 2010-2011
1. Assistance to College: Endowments and Donations
The following endowments have been continued. Sm. Dalia Datta has donated Rs. 1,00,000 in memory of her father Satyabrata Ghosh, from which two prizes will be given to students who score the maximum marks in Physics (Part II) and Physics (Part III) examination, respectively. Shri Gopendra Nath Roy has donated Rs. 30,000 in memory of his father Balai Charan Roy, from which one prize will go to the student who scores the maximum marks in M.Sc. Physics. Dr. Sisir Kumar Mazumder has created an endowment of Rs.1,00,000 for oration on Science and Humanities. Shri Parthasarathi Sengupta has donated Rs. 1,00,000 and Shri Saktinath Mukherji has donated Rs. 20,000, Shri Animesh Sen Rs. 25,000, Shri Subir Dutta Rs. 25,000 and Shri M K Chaudhury Rs. 1000 , that is a total of Rs.1,71,000 has been collected to create an endowment in the honour of Atul Chandra Gupta, the first President of the Alumni Association, with a view to felicitating a distinguished alumnus every year. The alumni association has donated Rs. 25,000/- for reviving the prestigious Derozio debate in the University. The President of the Association, Shri Anindya K Mitra, also personally donated to support the cause.
2. Publication
On the occasion of the Founders’ Day celebration, the 39th volume of the Autumn Annual, under the Chief-Editorship of Sm Nabaneeta DevSen and the Editorship of Shri Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, was released on 20 January 2011 by Shri Anindya Mitra, President of the Association. The Association expresses its gratitude to all those who have acquired advertisements towards generous financial support for the publication and other activities of the association.
3. Deputation to the Chief Minister
The alumni association in the last year had submitted a memorandum to the State Government for upgrading the college to the level of University. Finally when the government decided to make PresidencyUniversity, there was an apprehension among the general alumni members and the well wishers about political obstacles in the process of making the University a Centre of Excellence. On 19 August 2010, under the leadership of Shri Anindya Mitra, a delegate panel comprising Prof. Prasanta Roy, Shri Animesh Sen, Shri Bivas Chaudhuri and Smt Rupa Bandopadhyay met the Chief Minister to submit a memorandum in this regard. The Chief Minister, who also became a member of the alumni association on the spot, assured the team of all necessary help in this regard.
4. CLASSICAL EVENING
A classical evening was organized to celebrate the advent of monsoon entitled Megh-o-Malhar at the Derozio Hall on 28 August, 2010. The programme comprised vocal rendition by Shri Sugata Marjit and sarod recital by Pt. Buddhadeb Dasgupta and was attended by a large number of enthralled audiences. Tea and snacks were served during the break.
5. Bijoya Sammilani
This year’s Bijoya Sammilani was organized on 14 November 2010 at 6 pm at the Derozio Hall. The programme included a classical dance recital by Sm Arupa Biswas, recitation by Shri Arnab Khasnabis, Sm Swapna Kar, Sm Binota Raychaudhuri, Shri Asish Ghosh and Sm Rupa Biswas, and a bouquet of songs were delivered by Shri Sugata Majumdar, Shri Sudip Chatterjee, Shri Prabuddha Raha and Shri Somjit Chatterjee. Music was organized by Shri Somjit Chatterjee. Prof. Amita Chatterjee, Vice-Chancellor of Presidency University, appearing in the alumni programme for the first time, requested the members to help her achieve the desired targets of the newly-formed University. The programme was followed by a sumptuous dinner served by Bijoli Grill at the College Lawn.
6. EXCURSION TO SANTINIKETAN
Members of the alumni joined an excursion to Santiniketan to attend a special cultural programme on 4 December 2010, organized by the association at the residence of Shri Anindya Mitra, where tappa-based rabindra sangeet was presented by Shri Sugata Majumder, Shri Prabuddha Raha and Shri Somjit Chatterjee. This was followed by Santhali dance, performed by local santhal residents of Santiniketan, which was organized and sponsored by Sm Rupa Bandyopadhyay. During the period of stay, the excellent hospitality to the members extended by Sm Rupa Bandopadhyay, Shri Jayanta Mitra and Shri Anindya Mitra was worth mentioning. The SDO, Bolpur, co-operated with the association in booking accommodations for the members.
7. Udayan Mukherjee Memorial Debate
On 11 December 2010, Udayan Mukherjee Memorial Debate (Past vs Present Students) was organized by the University at Bankim Sabhagriha, PresidencyUniversity, Kolkata, with the assistance of alumni association. Shri Parthasarathi Sengupta, Vice-President of the Alumni Association, had endowed Rs. 1,00,000/- to the college to institute this annual debate competition in memory of Late Udayan Mukherjee, an alumnus. The topic of the debate was: In the opinion of the house: Politicians are just as partisan as the media in India. Shri Dipanjan Roychoudhuri, Shri Arunava Ghosh, Shri Somok Ray and Shri Tirthakamal Mitra represented the team-alumni which spoke in favour of the motion. The present students’ team, comprising Shri Adway De, Sm. Puja Kankaria, Sm. Yashi Surana and Shri Ujaan Ghosh argued against the motion. The Judges were Shri Chittatosh Mukherjee, Shri Dipak Rudra and Shri Surja K Banerjee. Shri Subrata Talukdar acted as Moderator. The audience voted in favour of the present students. Shri Adway De was adjudged the best speaker.
8. Dr. SISIR KUMAR MAZUMDAR ENDOWMENT LECTURE SERIES
The Sisir Mazumdar Endowment lecture was held on 6 January, 2011, at 3 pm at the Physiology Department where Dr. Chandan Sen, Professor of Surgery, Ohio State University, USA, delivered a lecture on Vitamin E in Stroke Therapeutics.
9. Dr. Nirupam Chandra Roy Centenary Memorial Lecture
On 18 January, 2011 at 1 pm, Dr. Nirupam Chandra Roy Centenary Memorial Lecture was held in collaboration with the Bengali department where Shri Tapabrata Ghosh, Rabindra Adhyapak, Visva Bharati University delivered a lecture on gitabitaner golpogochhu- phire dekha at the AJC Bose auditorium, Presidency University. Sm Amita Chatterjee, Vice Chancellor of Presidency University, presided over the function. Sm Madhusree Ghosh, alumnus, created this endowment through the alumni association in memory of her father Dr. Nirupam Chandra Roy. She also donated several books to the Bengali Department.
10. Seminar Lecture on Human Rights
With the support of the alumni association, the English department organized a lecture on The State of Human Rights in India by Shri Satyabrata Pal on 11 March, 2011 at 3 pm at AJC Bose auditorium. Prof Krishna Bose introduced the speaker and Sm. Amita Chatterjee, Vice Chancellor of Presidency University presided over the function.
11. Past vs Present Cricket Match
The Annual Cricket Match between the past and present students was held at the College ground on 15 January, 2011. The present students won the match. This was the first time the alumni association introduced trophies for the winner and the runners-up team. Senior alumni members Shri Anindya Mitra and Shri Asim Ganguly participated in the match. The present students won the match and received Trophy from the President of the alumni association Shri Anindya Mitra. Sm. Amita Chatterjee, Vice Chancellor of Presidency University was also present. Shri Mitra invited the participants to the evening tea organized at the college lawn.
12. Founders’ day celebration and Re-union Tea
The Founders’ Day of the college and Reunion for the year 2011 were celebrated on 20 January 2011, at the Derozio Hall and the college lawn, respectively. Shri Barun De was the President and Prof Mihir Rakshit acted as the Chief Guest in the function. The Alumni Association organized a Reunion Tea on the college lawn with sumptuous food from Bijoli Grill. The ready tea for the party was sponsored by the Tea Board of India.
13. Steamer Party
On 30 January 2011, a steamer party was organized on the HooghlyRiver on the specially chartered ‘Mayurpankhi Nao’. The alumni, their family members and friends thoroughly enjoyed the trip. The boat left Babughat at 10:00 am and returned at 5 pm.
14. Diamond Jubilee Celebration of the Alumni Association
The alumni association, founded in the year 1951, reached its diamond jubilee year in 2011. The association decided to celebrate it through a panel discussion on the future of PresidencyUniversity. On 11 June, 2011, at the Centenary Hall of the CalcuttaUniversity, the panel discussion was held where the speakers were Shri Amal Mukhopadhyay, Shri S P Mukherjee, Shri Bikash Chandra Sinha, Shri Sujit Basu, Shri Prasanta Ray, Shri Sukanta Chaudhuri, Shri Sibaji Raha, Shri Kankan Bhattacharya, Shri Abhirup Sarkar and Shri Sugata Marjit. The moderator was Shri Anindya Mitra. Sm Amita Chatterjee, Vice Chancellor of the PresidencyUniversity, delivered the key note address on her experience in the making of PresidencyUniversity. Shri Bivas Chaudhuri delivered the welcome address. Shri Sankha Ghosh was present in the audience along with many academics and former Principals of the college. Sm Sreyashi Ghosh anchored the programme. The panelists discussed various parameters and put forward suggestions for transforming the present university into a centre of excellence. The programme was given much importance by the Press and it was partially live telecast by the media channel Star Ananda. Outstanding rendition of Rabindra sangeet by Sm. Rajashree Bhattacharya and Shri Sugata Mazumder in the opening and closing ceremony enthralled the audience. It was decided in the discussion that a vision document for the university would be prepared based on the suggestions of the panel for submission before the appropriate authorities and the mentor group.
15. Annual Cultural Programme
The annual cultural programme was held on 2 July, 2011 at Sisir Mancha where the play chalochitto chanchori was staged under the direction of Shri Arun Mukhopadhyay. After almost two decades this play brought together two veteran thespian alumni Shri Arun Mukhopadhyay and Shri Bibhas Chakraborty. The other participants were Shri Bitan Bindu Bandhyopadhyay, Shri Subir Bhattacharyya, Shri Subir Mukhopadhyay, Shri Milan Bhowmik, Shri Somok Roy, Shri Arnab Khasnobis, Shri Mainak Sengupta, Shri Rajat Kanti Roy, Shri Subharthi Pal, and Shri Krishnendu Sinha. The music for the play was arranged by Shri Somjit Chatterjee. The play was preceded by a dance drama entitled mandakranta, based on Kalidasa’s Meghdoot. The participants were Sm Swarnali Barua, Sm Ananya Goswami, Sm Balaka Chatterjee, Sm Sagnika Chaudhuri, Sm Ankita Das, Sm Subhangi Sen, Sm Ankita Saha, Sm Rupsa Bramhachari, Sm Pritha Das, Sm Anindita Sarkar, Sm Ritoja Sinha, Sm Jayanti Sarkar. The dance programme was conducted under music direction of Shri Somjit Chatterjee, choreography and stage direction of Sm Monalisa Banerjee and overall direction of Sm Soma Basu. The total cultural programme was coordinated by Sm. Urmi Chatterji with the support of Sm Swapna Kar and Sm Aparajita Roy.
