Activities of Association

1.         Assistance to College: Endowments

The following endowments have been continued. Sm. Dalia Datta has donated Rs. 1,00,000 in memory of her father Satyabrata Ghosh, from which two prizes will be given to students who score the maximum marks in Physics (Part II) and Physics (Part III) examination, respectively. Shri Gopendra Nath Roy has donated Rs. 30,000 in memory of his father Balai Charan Roy, from which one prize will go to the student who scores the maximum marks in M.Sc. Physics. Dr. Sisir Kumar Mazumder has created an endowment of Rs.1,00,000 for oration on Science and Humanities. Shri Parthasarathi Sengupta has donated Rs. 1,00,000 and Shri Saktinath Mukherji has donated Rs. 20,000 to create an endowment in the honour of Atul Chandra Gupta, the first President of the Alumni Association, with a view to felicitating a distinguished alumnus every year.

2.         Publication

On the occasion of the Founders’ Day celebration, the 38th volume of the Autumn Annual was published on 20 January 2010 under the Chief-Editorship of Prof Tapan Raychaudhuri and the Editorship of Shri Nityapriya Ghosh. The Association expresses its gratitude to all those who have acquired advertisements towards generous financial support for the publication and other activities of the association.

3.         Bijoya Sammilani

This year’s Bijoya Sammilani was organized on 2 November 2009 at 6 pm at Calcutta Club. A programme under the theme – Kolkata aachhey Kolkata-tei was presented, in the fully packed sports complex. The participants were Sm. Ratna Basu, Shri Subhoranjan Dasgupta, Sm. Basanti Mukherji, Sm. Aparajita Ray, Sm. Swapna Kar, Shri Shakti Bhattacharyya, Sm. Urmi Chatterji, Shri Somjit Chatterjee, Sm. Debohuti Sarkar, Shri Jishnu Dasgupta, Sm Meghna Dass and Shri Sunayan Mukherjee. The programme was coordinated by Shri Jishnu Dasgupta and Sm Meghna Dass.  The programme was followed by dinner.

4.         Udayan Mukherjee Memorial Debate

On 12 December 2009, Udayan Mukherjee Memorial Debate (Past vs Present Students) was held at Bankim Sabhagriha, Presidency College, Kolkata. Shri Parthasarathi Sengupta, Vice-President of the Alumni Association, had endowed Rs. 1,00,000/- 

to the college to institute this annual debate competition in memory of Late Udayan Mukherjee, an alumnus.   The topic of the debate was:  In the opinion of the house: Terrorists are the true globalizers. Shri Dipanjan Roychoudhuri, Prof. Shirin Masud, Shri Abhirup Sarkar and Shri Boria Mazumder represented the team-alumni which spoke in favour of the motion. The present students’ team, comprising of Sm. Aishani Roy, Md. Waled Adnan, Sm. Yashi Surana and Sm Puja Kankaria argued against the motion. The Judges were Shri Basudeb Banerjee, Shri Pranab Sankar Mukhopadhyay and Shri Subhas Ranjan Chakrabarty. Shri Radharaman Chakrabarty, acted as Moderator. The audience voted in favour of the present students. Sm. Aishani Roy was adjudged the best speaker from the present team and Prof. Shirin Masud was adjudged the best speaker from the past team.

5.       Sisir Mazumdar Endowment Lecture

The Sisir Mazumdar Endowment lecture was held on 19 December 2009, at 3 pm, in the Bankim Sabhagriha, Main Building, Presidency College. Eminent economist Shri Pranab Bardhan delivered a lecture entitled The Tortuous Development of India’s Political Economy. Prof. Asish K Banerjee, ex-Vice Chancellor, University of Calcutta, acted as the Chairman.

6.         Past vs Present Cricket Match

The Annual Cricket Match between the past and present students was held at the College ground on 16 January, 2010. The present students won the match.

7.         Steamer Party

On 17 January 2010, a steamer party was organized on the Hooghly River on the specially chartered ‘Mayurpankhi Nao’. The alumni, their family members and friends thoroughly enjoyed the trip. The boat left Babughat at 10:00 am and returned at 5 pm. Around 150 members attended the party.

8.         Founders’ day celebration and Re-union Tea

The Founders’ Day of the college and Reunion for the year 2010 were celebrated on 22 January 2010 (20 January being a holiday on the occasion of Saraswati puja), at the Derozio Hall and the college lawn, respectively. Shri Bikash Sanyal was the President and Pt. Buddhadeb Dasgupta acted as the Chief Guest in the function. The Alumni Association organized a Reunion Tea on the college lawn with sumptuous food from Bijoli Grill. The tea for the party was sponsored by the Tea Board of India.

9.         Annual Cultural Programme

On 15 May 2010, to commemorate the 59th Foundation Day of the Alumni Association, the Annual Cultural Programme was organized at Sisir Mancha. The programme entitled ‘Robipradakshin’ was a tribute to Rabindranath Tagore, to celebrate his 150th birth anniversary. The musical tribute ‘Nirbachito Gaan’ conceptualized by Shri Sankha Ghosh and scripted by Shri Nityapriya Ghosh, comprised narration by Sm Swapna Kar and Shri Parthasarathi Roychowdhury, along with outstanding rendition of rabindrasangeet by Sm Rajashri Bhattacharyya, Shri Sugata Majumdar and the Presidency College Choir (coordinated by Sm Soma Basu). Music for the entire programme was arranged by Shri Somjit Chatterjee. First draft of ‘Char Adhyay’, which remains unpublished and different from the available version, was staged under the direction of Shri Arun Mukhopadhyay. The following alumni members participated in the play: Sm Damini Mukhopadhyay, Shri Mainak Sengupta, Shri Bitanbindu Bandhyopadhyay and others. The entire programme was coordinated by Sm Rita Banerjee.
